Eira Sands
Passion and a need to express myself have been the driving force behind my work which is generally an expressive depiction of my subject matter. As an intuitive painter, I allow my work to lead me and develop itself. I believe that nothing has to make sense to be relevant. Painting gives me the freedom to express myself, and allows me the freedom to regain the spiritual content that has been misplaced by materialism. The more I am able to set aside my insecurities and preconceived ideas, the greater my ability to trust my intuition, and take bigger risks on the canvas. This spontaneity leads to a better result. In the same way, the greater my trust in God, the more reconciled my life becomes.
Personal Background
Born in Zimbabwe, I grew up on a farm and from a young age enjoyed expressing myself with paint. In spite of wanting to study fine art, family pressure led me to the commercial world and I joined the advertising industry where I have been for my entire career.
I have painted in oils for many years and trained with the following artists:
Anton Uys
Pascale Chandler
Maggie Strachan
Jeanette Gilks
(as a member of the Garritt Artist Group)
I have sold work to the USA, UK, Zimbabwe, Australia and South Africa where I currently reside.
I have taken part in exhibitions at the National art Gallery of Zimbabwe, Art Gallery KZNSA, Artspace, Tatham and Fat Tuesday galleries in KZN, and the KZN Durban Art Gallery.
